I would like to share with you how I started my online income journey. Various changes within the South African political scene and its economy had been taking place for some time and my husband and I found it increasingly difficult to sustain our construction business. We depended on being awarded tenders and with a system of BEE or Black Economic Empowerment existing to redress the inequalities of Apartheid, our tender awards dried up. This policy has changed the lives of many Black people in South Africa but it meant that we had to close our business and we battled to get employment. My husband eventually found a job far away from home. We battled along, surviving by the skin of our teeth and with a huge mountain of debt to boot. In 2014 my husband and I decided to get a divorce. The distance and financial pressures had dealt a death blow to our marriage.
The upshot of this was that I decided I did not want to be financially dependent on him for the rest of my life. I was determined to make an income online although I was receiving pressure on all sides to continue applying for jobs. I was already receiving some online income from writing articles and copywriting. However, I wanted to step it up a level and felt that I needed to start my own website. I was fortunate to receive a link to a program called Wealthy Affiliate. I saw that I could join for free. I liked the look of the site that seemed to offer plenty of free resources. I thought I would give it a try. I immediately followed the Get Started training and in a short period of time I had accomplished the following:
- I had my very own niche website on my own domain
- I had optimized my website for SEO
- I understood more about the process of creating content
- I had created pages of content that were starting to get ranked
- My foundation for a long term, and successful business was in place.
Added to that, I had discovered that the community at Wealthy Affiliate was exactly what I had been looking for – encouraging and supportive. There are many members who really enjoy helping others and so you never have a question that goes unanswered.
I began to get excited as I could see that traffic to my site was gradually increasing. I knew that I needed to create content that appealed to readers and have traffic before I could even think of starting to earn money from my website.
