10 Bible verses for depression Posted on October 3October 23 If you are looking for Bible verses for depression, there are many to be found. I have selected just 10 verses that were helpful to me when I was suffering from depression. Many great men and women, including those found in the Bible, have experienced depression. Clinical depression is a medical condition. It is not caused by difficult circumstances and the symptoms are not cured by an exercise of will power. It needs to be treated with medication and/or counseling. When I was suffering from clinical depression, I resisted taking medication because I was trusting God to heal me. It took me a long time to come to the point where I was ready to ask for help. What pushed me to do it was when I realized how much my family was suffering as a result of my depression. When I finally went to the doctor he said to me that if I was a diabetic, I would need to take insulin and in the same way, my brain was not producing enough serotonin and I needed to take something that would correct this. What he said took away my feelings of guilt. I began taking anti-depressants and for me, that was the right thing to do. For me the combination of taking medication and my faith got me through. When we are depressed, it is helpful to have Bible verses to read for encouragement. Our emotions may be unstable but God’s word does not change. Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” Psalm 23:4 “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil; for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff, they comfort me.” Psalm 40:1-2 “I waited patiently for the Lord; And He inclined to me, and heard my cry. He brought me up out of the pit of destruction, out of the miry clay, and He set my feet upon a rock, making my footsteps firm.” Psalm 91:1-4 “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” For it is He who delivers you from the snare of the trapper and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you may seek refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and bulwark. Psalm 139:13-14 “For Thou didst form my inward parts; Thou did weave me in my mother’s womb, I will give thanks to Thee, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Thy works, And my soul knows it very well.” Isaiah 41:10 “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you; Surely I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 43:2 “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be scorched, Nor will the flame burn you.” Micah 7:8 “Do not rejoice over me, O my enemy. Though I fall down I will rise; Though I dwell in darkness, the Lord is a light for me.” Matthew 10:29-30 “Are not two sparrows sold , yet not one sparrow falls to the ground without your Father’s consent. As for you, even the hairs of your head have all been counted. Romans 8:38-39 “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
